Focal

The west termination of University Boulevard has experienced significant redevelopment over recent years, including the new Alumni Centre and AMS Student Nest building. In addition to these institutional developments, a number of residential buildings have been built to help bolster the housing stock for UBC students and staff. Focal is a low-rise rental building providing a diverse mix of residential units above a retail base. The main building form aligns two interlocking rectilinear ‘tubes’ oriented along University Boulevard, whereas the retail base is shaped by the connecting pedestrian pathways that interface in and around the site. The building fronts onto MacInnes Field which was rebuilt over a single level of below grade parking as part of the Focal development, providing a valuable new recreational space for sports and outdoor events.
