The Smithe

The Smithe tower occupies a compact corner site on the edge of Yaletown, and comprises of a mix of residential units, hotel suites, and retail space at grade. The small site footprint presenting challenges with accommodating adequate outdoor amenity space within the development, and consequently the tower was decoupled from the podium base to allow for a sizable break within the building massing. The soffit above this outdoor amenity space forms the public art component of the building, a 2,000sf screen printed canvas, illuminated during the evening hours. The hotel podium sits above the retail base, housing 36 boutique suites accessed directly off Smithe Street. The punched terracotta podium façade is a modern interpretation of the historic brick buildings that characterise the surrounding neighbourhood.
